The calm on the other side…

DSCN1225

This weekend we took a spin over to Cedar Point at high tide to check out the waves against the breakwaters. In a happy coincidence, the sun was setting as the tide reached its peak.

My daughter is staring out at the water on the other side. The waves are slamming into the stones and spray is everywhere. The lighthouse stands tall as the nieghboring houses shoulder wave after furious wave. But more than the sight and smell of the sea, what sticks with me is the sound…. as each wave draws itself back, it pulls all the smaller rocks on the shoreline along with it. Hundreds of stones clicking and clacking as the wave inhales – and then, whoosh, everything gets flung towards dry land again.

But looking at this picture… what you see is the harbor, peaceful and protected, calm and glowing at the end of day. There’s no sign of the tumult on the other side. It’s just a little girl standing still in a quiet moment. You have no idea what was really going on just beyond the reach of my camera lens.

I think that’s why I like this photograph so much.
