Libraries aren’t just places to borrow books anymore. They host knitting groups and teach patrons to use computers, provide public meeting spaces and train English As a Second Language tutors, and lend out an astonishing array of materials and items. I am told there is a South Shore library that has a giant parachute – you know, the kind that little kids play popcorn with in gym class? – and that town residents can borrow it. How cool is that?
And here’s something else cool that libraries do – they bring artists and musicians into the community. This afternoon the Scituate Town library hosted Un-Think It! (The Art of the Flow). They described it as follows:
This special event features Artist Lennie Peterson creating a 5′ X 3′ portrait of composer and jazz legend Duke Ellington in front of a live audience accompanied by the improvised music of guitarist Mark Campbell and saxophonist Tom Hall.
Let me assure you that that one sentence does not accurately convey the energy and sheer fun of this event. Wonderful music, wonderful art, wonderful energy, wonderful fun.
