Today’s photo is of Minot’s Light, which sits on Minot’s Ledge off the coast of Scituate and Cohasset.
It’s a calm day in this photograph with perfect blue skies and blue seas, and it all looks so peaceful and lovely in this scene.
The story of Minot’s Light, however, has little to do with serenity and nothing at all to do with calm or peace – and it’s going to take more than a day or two to tell it.
For now , look at that granite tower and think about what you’re seeing. It’s only a mile from shore and there is no island on which it might stand. It marks a vicious ledge off a capricious coast… and this tower is the second lighthouse to be built on that spot. The first one…well, the first one was washed clean away.
But that’s a story for tomorrow.
