Canning or “dump begging” is a tradition here in Scituate. Community groups will obtain permission from the town’s Transfer Station to solicit donations for their organization; they set up camp by the exit and hope that any kind souls coming through on their weekend errands will be generous enough to give money to their cause.
This morning, it was the South Shore Summer Theater seeking donations. The younger actors are putting on The Wizard of Oz while the older crew will present The Pirates of Penzance. This wonderful program gives kids an opportunity to sing, dance, light up stages and learn technical theater skills during their summer vacation. I hung out with my little munchkin and her castmates holding signs and waving and smiling. Scituate folks sure are generous! As the kids called out to everyone who drove by – be sure to come and see the shows!
