In Memory of the Sailors

In Fairview Cemetery just behind the Congregational Church it rests quietly – a large boulder with words engraved but softly fading.

“In Memory – of the sailors – wrecked on Egypt Beach – 1844 – bodies rest here.”

Scituate has seen many shipwrecks over the years but there’s little information to be gleaned from the mute stone. And just like the carved words, the memory fades.
