A picnic bench by Little Bridge has hunkered down for the season. If you’re wearing very warm socks and turn your face into the sun, you can close your eyes and listen for an echo of the summer. There’s the droning of an outboard engine in that echo, and someone’s laughter is buoyed up by the little waves of the river. If you lean into that memory hard enough and ignore the cold tips of your fingers, you can smell the salty air made warm by the long sunny days.
But some days, all you can feel is the cold.

That’s a scene worth savoring.
