Today was such a beautiful day – a gift after the deluge yesterday. That rain led to all kinds of blooming and greening all over the place, and I thought I would go to one of my favorite little spots in North Scituate, Hunter’s Pond… but, alas, the place where I have always parked – and the place where the volunteers from the North and South Rivers Watershed Association have parked while conducting their annual herring run counts – is now firmly and sternly marked as PRIVATE PROPERTY.
But it’s always better to look for silver linings to every cloud, however petulant the clouds might make you, so here’s the bright spot –
had I not been turned away from Hunter’s Pond, I might not have ended up underneath the old train canopy by Wilbur’s. I definitely would have missed the way the setting sun skipped haphazardly across the old tiles. I certainly would have missed the skittering, flittering crowd of sparrows that have taken up residence on top of the old canopy.
Being stalked by small little birds intent on protecting their turf will coax a smile from even the most irritated curmudgeon – like, say, me.
Nice to have a silver lining like that. The shot is beautiful, but the story is better. Sorry to hear about your herring run spot. I’m surprised the property owners won’t make exceptions for the volunteers?
Town meeting just voted a CPC project which will restore the canopy to it’s former glory – should be a nice place to sit and enjoy North Scituate Village once it’s complete

@litch – Yes, I was happy to cast a vote for the CPC projects and it would be wonderful to see that canopy brought back!
This has been bugging me since I saw it last week – that property used to be a school bus turnaround. The condo owners cleared the brush and laid down grass and put up a granite fence. I believe they got in trouble with the conservation commission for that. I tried to look up the info but couldn’t find anything. The condos are in Cohasset, and the property in the picture is Scituate. Makes it confusing when you look at the registry of deeds as it is two separate counties. At this point I cant’ figure out who the condo owners purchased the former Cohasset school bus turnaround from. It’s kind of weird.
I live up the street and once limped home on a popped tire until I got the pond and realized I wouldn’t be able to make it any further. I pulled onto the parking area and was immediately screamed at by one of the residents. So selfish of me to break down there! Great guy.
What’s there now is 100% better than the intimidating and rusting Quonset huts that used to be there!
Thanks, Chris! I suspected that the sign was put up by the condos, and wondered about the whole town boundary issue. At one point, I found a map that labelled that small area as “Lincoln Park” but I can’t seem to find it now.
I volunteered last year to watch for herring there – alas, never saw any – and came at varying times of days and parked in that spot. I never saw anyone else there, so I was quite astonished to see that very expensive, aggressive sign.
I really do wonder who owns that property.
And yes, I remember those huts! They were awful!!
