The blacktop is freshly painted, the building’s spruced up and open, the school buses are making their rounds – it’s the first day of school in Scituate!

The first day of school was always after Labor Day when I was young. Down here, they start in mid-August. Not only is it still way too hot, it’s way too early. Summer isn’t over until Labor Day. Period.
In AZ some kids go back the end of July and some don’t go back until around the 15th of August…depends I guess on which school district and whether or not they go to regular public school of state funded charter schools. I don’t have kids or grandchildren in school here but looked after a ten year old for three years…before and after school. So I agree, summer isn’t over until after Labor Day!
I can’t imagine starting in mid-August! However, I will say this – my nephew starts up the Wednesday before Labor Day weekend. They go on Wednesday and Thursday, and then have a four day weekend – and I see the sense in that! It’s a sort of soft start, rather than plowing into things with a full week right off the back!
