Literally, thar she blows, since this life-size North Atlantic right whale is kept inflated so visitors can wander right on in and have a look see at the inside of a whale.

This particular whale was at the Scituate Library today, thanks to the good folks at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sancutuary. With their “Whales in Your Backyard!” program, folks can learn all about whales of every shape and size and have a tremendous amount of fun while doing so.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year – and here’s to twenty more, because we are very lucky to have such a wonderful resource here in Scituate!

  1. Oh how fun and what a great idea! I really enjoyed this first visit to your blog. Finally figured out you are in MA!

  2. Along the western shores of our most southern state, Tasmania, 20 whales beached (beeched) themselves in the last couple of days. Southern Right Whales, I think. 16 have already died, and they are hoping to tow the others to deeper waters. Generally, they all die.

I wonder why whales do this?

  3. Seems like a great idea for kids to understand the size of these guys.

  4. What a great idea! Is his name Jonah?

  5. We have so much work to do when it comes to understanding and protecting these creatures…
