Where have all the pumpkins gone? Long time passing…

In my wanderings this morning, I came across a small wooded area filled with jack o’lanterns. They hadn’t been stolen and smashed, but rather laid out carefully among the trees. They still smiled and grinned despite the solitude and the decay. Perhaps they’re feeding birds and squirrels; perhaps, come the warm weather next year, their seeds will emerge as flowering vines.

Perhaps they’re waiting for the Great Pumpkin.

This is definitely one of those instances where the actual story behind the event could not possibly be as good as all the possibilities I’ve come up with in my head!

  1. I can help you out with this one! The preschool children carefully place their classroom pumpkins out in this thicket so that they might become houses for small little mice! Read the story “Mousekin’s Golden House” and you will understand. We read the story together and then the children fill the pumpkins with soft leaves and feathers. We walk with them to the woods and they find the “perfect” spot for their pumpkin and then we leave it. We often come to check on them during the next few months to see if we see any signs of life! Usually we find them eaten by deer and squirrels…

  2. Oh wonderful, thank you for sharing that! I wondered, given the proximity of the preschool – so glad to have it confirmed. 🙂
