It’s herring season! This fish ladder might look a bit intimidating but it’s actually designed to make their journey back to the freshwater spawning grounds that much easier. Thanks to the work of conservationists in general and the North South River Watershed Association in particular the herring are making a resurgence in this area. While I didn’t spy any fish this morning, I am pleased to report that the herring have been spotted at First Herring Brook in Scituate for the first time in decades!

There seems to be a happy trend to restoring fisheries. They are taking down two dams on the Olympic Peninsula to restore historic salmon runs. Fish often to return if conditions are good, though the projects can be mired in controversy. I hope they work!
I think that people are starting to realize that we are part of an ecosystem and that we need to ensure the health of all within. It’s good to see.
What a wonderful achievement – to bring the herring back. Are they meant to go up or down this ladder? They would be very trim and fit from all the buffetting from the waters.
They go up the ladder, Julie – it’s quite something to see. Often they gather in large groups at the foot of the ladder – and then there are clusters at the top, where they are resting after the exhausting leaps.
