The attack of the seaweed/DPW to the rescue!

If you’ve been to Minot Beach lately, this is the scene that has awaited you: Minot Beach

All of the recent turbulence in the ocean has torn seaweed loose from the rocks on the ocean floor and along the coast, and then the tide has carried it in to beaches like Minot and Peggotty. (Not my beloved Egypt Beach, though!)

Never fear, beachgoers, because as I type this the Scituate Department of Public Work (DPW) is working on clearing the sand:

DPW to the rescue!

  1. Isn’t the water still too cold for swimming? It looks like that front end loader is making short work of the seaweed. Stay cool.

    • Nope, not for us hardly New Englander types! It has actually been very pleasant these last few days. 🙂

  2. Oh, send these guys to the Pacific Northwest! We’ve begun to get tsunami debris from last year’s Japan quake washing onto the Pacific coast beaches – a huge pier about a week or so ago, a whole house, too. Experts have been tracking the stuff for months – yet there’s no plan for dealing with it and apparently this is just a beginning.

    • I heard about the pier but not about the house, Kay – scary stuff!

  3. The house came ashore and broke up near Neah Bay, on Macah Indian lands. A very big derelict ship was found and sunk further north. There’s a lot of concern about all the potential invasive species that have hitched onto the debris and come into our waters. A big effort was made to clean off the pier before it was removed.
