Putting the ‘heritage’ into Heritage Days, the Historical Society opens their sites all across town. Many other groups follow suit, including the Sons of Union Veterans, who hosted a Civil War Day at the G.A.R. Hall.
Costumed reenactors were on hand (if you thought yesterday was hot, try wearing a wool uniform or a long-sleeved, hooop-skirted dress!) and visitors learned a great deal about the U.S. Sanitary Commission, a private relief organization created to care for soldiers in the Civil War. They did everything from knitting socks to creating hospital camps and even children raised money to support their good works.
The reenactors we met were incredibly knowledgeable about their subject – and wildly entertaining to boot. Shopping and music are a big part of Heritage Days – but it isn’t all that’s offered!

Thank you for your very nice blog and the photos. “Wildly entertaining?” What a nice compliment! It just reinforces what I had been saying to many who came to visit us that day: “History wasn’t boring, your history teacher was.”
You make our small traveling set up look really great. We had a great time in Scituate. So glad we could entertain you as well. We must to done our job properly. Thanks for your nice write up.
