Shoefiti, Or: We are more alike than we are different.

Ali Crehan Photography: Scituate Daily Photo 2012 &emdash;

I’m fairly certain that this is a familiar sight, no matter where in the world you’re sitting as you look at this photo. Shoefiti, shoe tossing, shoes on a wire – everywhere you go, people do it. Explanations range from bullying to simple pranks, from tributes to the dead to drug activity – everyone’s got a theory as to the Why and the Who of the matter. As for the How – well, that’s pretty straightforward. Tie ’em together and let ’em fly.

On a side note – a few people have told me that the letter verification challenge for commenting was really giving them trouble, so I’ve taken that off. This does mean that I have had to remove the option for anonymous comments to prevent spam. I do welcome and enjoy your comments – so don’t be shy!

  1. I noticed the verification challenge was removed. Thank you! It could be pretty annoying at times.

    I’d not seen the term “shoefiti” before. It’s perfect! The best place I’ve seen it is on a very stark tree in a remote part of Arizona off a two lane road. Unexpected and, in context, a little funny – more a prank than anything ominous.

  2. Yup, I’ve even seen it here in Perth Ali..would be interesting to know the ‘actual’ meaning! There’s a nice little ‘tangle’ of shoes here! Gosh how blue is your sky, mine has been dark and thunderous this last week, but sun for the weekend yay!

  3. I have seen these, but they are certainly not common where I live.

    Thanks for losing the word verification. It was a big hassle.

  4. I always feel bad for the kid who has to go home and tell his mom he lost his sneakers…

  5. I just saw a pair on a wire in downtown Toronto, but typically they are not so common around here. šŸ™‚

  6. Certainly a prevalent sight in MA ~ Neat photo ~ (A Creative Harbor)

    Thanks for removing word verification ~ ^_^

  7. I’ve read a theory that it’s about territory marking.

  8. I’ve seen this around here and can’t figure why anyone would do this. I HOPE it’s NOT bullying. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment today.
