The surface of Mordecai Lincoln’s gravestone is softening with the passage of time – hardly surprising, given its age. The words, etched deep, are still readable by a determined eye:

HERE LYES YE BODY
OF MR MORDEKE
LINCOLN WHO DIED
NOVEMBER YE 28
1727 IN YE
71 YEAR OF HIS AGE
Mordecai Lincoln made his fortune in the mills he built throughout the Massachusetts Bay Colony area, making him one of the wealthiest men in the district. Lincoln had a large home on the Gulph River and dammed up nearby Bound Brook for a grist mill. The pond that resulted, Hunter’s Pond, lies between Country Way and Mordecai Lincoln Road in North Scituate, right on the border with Cohasset.
It was not only in the local land that he left his mark and name – for Mordecai Lincoln’s great great great grandson, Abraham, became the 16th President of the United State of America.

Wow, what a fascinating post and such a beautiful stone.
Beneath Thy Feet
Now that’s a true find! Not only a prominent former resident, but the ancestor of a great president! Good for you! Interesting stone and a good “read,” too.
the olde englyshe is a treasure to see.
and it has an interesting design – looks almost like a spider ghost to me
I do not know whAT A ‘spider ghost’ is, but to me it looks like an alien invader. I do like it very much for a headstone.
Iwondered about all the great-greats between Mordecai and Abraham, but I guess there are enough years from 1700 to 1850 …
I find all the names of villages aned natural points so very engrossing. Especially in your part of the USA.
What did you think of the first debate yesterday? Not a lot of locking of horns over contentious policy. Not a lot of definite policy at all from your ex-governor. What did you think?
