ABC Wednesday: N is for Nor’Easter

Ali Crehan Photography: Scituate Daily Photo 2012 ABC Wednesday: N is for Nor'Easter

N is for Nor’Easter, a storm particular to the east coast of North America. These beasts can be savage, like the No Name Storm (or The Perfect Storm, as some of you know it) or the Blizzard of 1978. Scituate is favorite spot for the local TV crews to visit whenever a storm blows up and it’s a bit of a sport to watch them hanging on for dear life while reporting from the Scituate Lighthouse. Truth be told, it’s a bit of a sport to go out and watch the weather yourself – like during this storm last October.

The lighthouse you see enshrouded in a massive wave is Minot Light; it is a unshakable granite tower standing 97 feet tall on a narrow ledge off the coast of Scituate and Cohasset. This photo was taken from Minot Beach in North Scituate, where the seawalls provide some measure of protection for fools like me.

N is for Nor’Easter. Never fail to respect its power.

This is my contribution to ABC Wednesday.

  2. Wowser! Scary stuff. Almost makes me glad all we have to contend with is tornadoes.

  3. We all fear most what we are unfamiliar with, Cheri! We had a small earthquake the other day, unusual for this area, and some people were utterly panicked about it. A Californian probably wouldn’t have even noticed the tremor!

  4. That’s right, I didn’t even feel it here in Fairfield, CA Tee Hee.
Actually, I’m a transplant from Scituate and have experienced both. Each can be terrifying in their own way, but I do miss a good Nor’easter, especially when the damage is not great.

  5. There is nothing like a good storm blowing up, as long as the damage is minimal….!
