This sculptured piece is on the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Edward Foster Road. It is clearly intended to commemorate the first World War – or as they knew it, simply the World War – and was created by Cora Loverland in 1931. It’s a poignant work, infused with emotion. While the man on the right kneels with his back straight and strong and looks unflinchingly ahead, his female counterpart is bowed and her face is sad. She looks forlornly at the remaining laurel in her open hand with lowered lids.
In gratitude and grief, we mark Veterans Day today.

Hi Ali, You’ve written a beautiful commemorative post. Thanks much for your comment on my health expose on Astoria Daily. May we both (all) prosper in our delightful towns on the water. All the best, Sheryl
