Sign of the times

Ali Crehan Photography: Scituate Daily Photo 2013 &emdash; Sign of the times

When I was a kid, the library had books and magazine and the card catalogs were on manilla cards in long, long drawers. My library card was typewritten and fit in my wallet and they checked out the books with a rubber date stamp.

It’s a different world. Now you can get DVDs, graphic novels and museum passes and you check them out with a little plastic card that gets scanned. Or if you can’t sleep in the middle of the night, you can go online and check out an electronic book right then and there and have it delivered to your e-reader within minutes. You can go to the library for a book group or you can go there to learn to knit. There are career groups, study groups, Lego clubs, musical concerts and volunteer fairs. And you can even go for help with your electronic devices – because today’s librarians do it all.

    • Or find a good reference source that explains it!

  1. Fast times.

  2. I may need this for my new phone!!

  3. yeah, the library ain’t what it used to be!

    • Nope, it’s even better. πŸ˜‰

    • I love it too, JoAnn. Librarians are my heroes.

  4. I presume the sign is referring to using e-readers and downloading library books. The final selling point for me in getting a Nook last year was that I could download library books hassle-free. It’s fantastic! I just finished the second book in the ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ series and immediately downloaded the third one from the library. And, when the e-book is supposed to be ‘returned’, it just vanishes from your e-reader. Love it.

    • I love that, too! Checking books out at any time of day or night, wonderful stuff…
