IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Plymouth County and the Town of Scituate is anticipated to receive significant impacts. 18-24 inches of snow are expected along with coastal flooding and high winds. Heavy snow will begin between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday with potential white out conditions. Additional storm impacts are anticipated on Saturday morning with high tide at 10:15 a.m. and winds peaking.

This is a very serious storm. Residents are advised to use common sense and caution. Stay safe and off the roadways. Travel and access to coastal areas will be restricted to emergency personnel only. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

It is highly recommended that immediate coastal areas prone to flooding be evacuated. Central Avenue north of Newport Street in Humarock is expected to be impassable after 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening. Residents are advised that police, fire, and emergency personnel will not be able to travel safely in this area.

The Town will open its shelter at Scituate High School on Friday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. for residents and their pets.

Scituate Public Schools will have an early dismissal on Friday, February 8. All Town Offices and the Library will be closed at noon on Friday and all day on Saturday. The transfer station will be open till noon on Friday and closed on Saturday but will reopen on Sunday morning.

The Building Inspector urges oceanfront residents to install storm shutters over ocean facing windows and doors well in advance of the high winds that are predicted for the upcoming blizzard. The Board of Health advised residents to put t heir “Map Your Neighborhood” signs in windows.

The Scituate Highway Department advises that from Friday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m. through Saturday, February 9, at 4:00 p.m. they will be performing emergency snow removal and street clearing operations. Motorists are strongly advised to remain off the streets during these hours. Vehicles parked on public streets are subject to being towed at the owner’s expense. Parking on public ways will be prohibited after 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 8 until further notice.

The Town will permit parking from noon on Friday to Sunday at noon at Widow’s Walk parking lot and the school parking lots. Vehicles remaining after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10 will be subject to ticketing.

Power outages are expected to be long in duration as powerful winds and excessive flooding will prevent restoration to wires. National Grid is at a Level 5, its highest alert and power outages are expected to last a minimum of 72 hours. Beware of downed wires and expect that they are live. Individuals that have homes that rely on electricity for heat and leave should keep water running to preserve pipes.
